How to migrate from TallyPrime to Zoho Books

Moving from Tally to Zoho Books comes down to three things: preparing your Tally data, bringing it into Zoho Books in the right order, and proving the figures match. This guide walks through each step, then shows how V2W FinBridge does the same job for you.

The short answer

You can migrate from TallyPrime to Zoho Books in two ways. You can export reports from Tally, reshape them in spreadsheets and import them module by module — Zoho describes this manual route in its own Tally to Zoho Books migration guide. Or you can use a migration solution such as V2W FinBridge, which moves your masters, opening balances and transactions for you and checks the result.

Either way, the steps below are the ones that matter.

Step 1: Decide what to bring across

Before touching any data, agree three things with your accountant:

  • Your cut-off date. Most businesses switch at the start of a financial year (1 April). A mid-year switch also works, with opening balances taken as of an agreed date.
  • How much history. Opening balances only, the current year’s transactions, or previous years as well.
  • Which companies. If you run several Tally companies, list which ones move and when.

Step 2: Clean up your Tally company

A migration copies whatever is in Tally — including mistakes. Before you start:

  • Merge duplicate ledgers, customers and vendors.
  • Check that every customer and vendor has the right GSTIN, state and address.
  • Clear unused stock items and old suspense entries.
  • Reconcile bank accounts up to your cut-off date.
  • Take a full backup of the Tally company.

Step 3: Set up your Zoho Books organisation

Create the organisation with the same financial year, base currency and GST registration details as your Tally company. Set up your GST settings and tax rates before importing anything, so that every customer, vendor and transaction picks up the right tax treatment.

Step 4: Bring across your masters

Masters must go in before any transaction that uses them. The usual order is:

  1. Chart of accounts — your Tally ledgers become Zoho Books accounts.
  2. Customers and vendors — your sundry debtors and sundry creditors, with GSTIN and addresses.
  3. Items — your stock items and units.

The names are different in each product. For example, a Tally sales voucher is an invoice in Zoho Books, and a debit note is a vendor credit. See the side-by-side terms table on our TallyPrime to Zoho Books page.

Step 5: Enter opening balances

Enter the balance of every account as of your cut-off date, along with outstanding customer invoices, unpaid vendor bills and opening stock. Your debits and credits must be equal. In Zoho Books, the Opening Balance Adjustments account should end at zero — if it doesn’t, something is missing.

Step 6: Bring across transactions

If you are bringing history, import transactions in a logical order — purchases, then sales, then payments and receipts, then journals — so that each payment can be matched to the bill or invoice it settles.

Watch out: backdated transactions entered before your opening balance date will change your balances. Keep opening balances and history consistent, or your trial balance won’t match.

Step 7: Check the figures before you go live

Compare Tally and Zoho Books side by side for the cut-off date:

  • Trial balance
  • Receivables and payables, customer by customer and vendor by vendor
  • Stock summary
  • GST summaries for the last return period

Only switch your team to Zoho Books once these agree.

FAQ

Tally to Zoho Books migration questions

Can I migrate from Tally to Zoho Books myself?

Yes. Zoho describes a manual export-and-import method in its own guide. It works well for small, clean data sets, but takes time and care as the volume and history grow.

What is the right order to import Tally data into Zoho Books?

Set up tax and GST settings first, then the chart of accounts, customers and vendors, and items. After that, enter opening balances, and finally import transactions.

How much history should I bring from Tally?

It depends on your needs. Many businesses bring opening balances plus the current financial year; others bring previous years for reporting and audit. Agree the scope with your accountant before you start.

How do I check that my migration is correct?

Compare the trial balance, receivables, payables, stock and GST summaries in Tally and Zoho Books for your cut-off date. In Zoho Books, the Opening Balance Adjustments account should be zero.

Do I need to keep Tally after moving to Zoho Books?

Keep your Tally company as a read-only reference, at least until the closing year’s audit and GST returns are complete.
